To use incense safely, be sure to use the appropriate burner, box, or brazier. Each type of incense can be burned in different ways.
- Stick incense can be supported upright or laid flat in the appropriate burner. There are hundreds of safe ways to support stick incense. Just be sure that the burning ember does not contact flammable material. To use stick incense in a wooden burner, first support a few sticks above the burner so that the ash will collect in the channel. Then, subsequent sticks can be laid directly upon the ash and will burn safely.
- Powders and resins require a burner that can safely contain the heat of the burning charcoal. Cone incense also requires a burner that can safely contain the ember of the cone, especially when it reaches the bottom. For such use, try a metal or stone vessel.
